I love polka dots!

Oh, quanto adoro i pois! Incominciamo dall'inizio.
Oh, I love polka dots so much! Last summer I dreamt to have a polka dot dress in my wardrobe, preferably in 50's style. I wanted to wear it during my holidays in september, so I started at the beginning of August, but ... There's always a "but" when you sew! The dress was still incomplete, when I went on holiday and I was very disappointed. What happened? Let's start from the beginning.

Conoscete Tilly and the buttons?
Do you know Tilly and the buttons? She's a patterns' designer, which has a beautiful and interesting blog and she participated at first edition of "The Great British Sewing Bee".
I really love Tilly's style, simple, feminine with a retro feel. At the beginning of last summer she released her book "Love at first stitch" and I immediately bought in english (because not yet published in Italian) because it's particularly suitable for beginners - here you can see all the patterns in the book.
The inspiration came to me when I saw Lilou dress, a dress with a classic shape, sleeveless, with pleated skirt and back zipper. In the book, Tilly also shows some variations you can do, how to make a gathered skirt instead of pleats and make scalloped neckline.
In a local shop I bought a black fabric with white polka dots, a rather heavy cotton with a small percentage of elastane. I immediately saw the dress already finished in my mind!
I chose a size 4, and, as usual, I didn't make any muslin. At first the only changes I made were lengthen the bodice of 2 cm and change the lining. The pattern includes the lining of entire bodice, but since my fabric quite heavy, I decided to strengthen the shoulders and around the neck, as done by Marie of A Stitching Odyssey in this dress.
During first fitting, I noticed a small defect at the side darts, but I thought that when I would sew the zipper, it would disappear. So I sewed the skirt to the bodice.
The real "challenge" was to sew the zip and understanding how much seam allowance I had to leave. Leaving 1.5 cm as the pattern required, the dress was huge and I didn't like it. So I started to find where I would sew the zip and... how much patience! I made all the fittings alone in front of the mirror, making tricks to see my back and at the end I was tired. And you? How do your fitting? Do you have a mannequin and it's useful? Or your boyfriend, husband or mother help you?
When I finally found the right seam allowance for the zip (it was 4 cm because I wanted the dress to be well-fitted) the problem of side darts had multiplied! Aaaahhhhh! I was discouraged, I didn't know how to fix it (I made this dress before my Bruyère shirt) and I needed my mother's advice.
So I dropped the dress on the chair, I focused on other projects and I went on holiday. In late September, I went to visit my mom (she lives 400 km far away from me) and I brought with me the Lilou dress.
My mom told me I had to lower side darts about 1 cm and she confirmed me that I had correctly placed the zip. I was able to finish the dress! I was so happy also because for the first time I used my mom's overlock to make finishings (oh, what a treat!). I topstitched the neckline and the armholes, although Tilly doesn't recommend it, but I love topstitching! (and you know if you follow me on Instagram). Longer finishing was hem, strictly made by hem: I spent some hours only for it, but I love it!
Lilou dress is a summer dress, but thanks to my quite heavy fabric and to mild climate, I was able to wear it in early autumn with tights and cardigan. Next spring I'm sure I'll make another one because Lilou dress is simple and beautiful!
Cartamodello: Lilou dress di Tilly and the buttons
Pattern: Lilou dress by Tilly and the buttons
Fabric: cotton with a small percentage of elastane
Alteration: I lengthened the bodice, lowered the side darts and tightened the back of the dress.

  2. Well, who doesn't love polka dots? I traced my lilou pattern in the summer too, but I didn't make the dress, even though I have decided on the fabric. Anyway! I love your dress! It looks great on you.
As for your question, I have a dress form and I use it when I sew a garment.
