Bag #1: fold over clutch

09 March 2015
A simple clutch : it was one of the first pin when I started using Pinterest and I didn't know to sew.

There are so many tutorials for this type of bag that it's difficult to choose. I chose this free download pattern from Pattern Runway just because it's made by designers of patterns of clothes and I thought the instructions were clear.
It's unuseless to print the pdf with the pieces of the bag. It's very simple: it is composed of only two square of fabric for the outside and two squares for the lining, plus a small inside pocket and a zipper.
Ok, I don't choose very spring colors, but I used fabrics I already had. I bought them long time ago, before I started to sew clothes. I bought the faux leather to refashion an old bangle. I didn't have the sense of proportion and I bought about 50 cm of faux leather. For the lining I chose another fabric from my small collection, bought a few years ago to Abilmente fair, a houndstooth patchwork fabric. Then I bought this neon pink zipper on the site of Supercut. And following this tutorial, I made a leather tassel. Et voila!
To give more rigidity to the bag, I used a material, whose technical name is still unknown to me, that I found in a patchwork shop.
The instructions are clear, but I completely wrong inserting the zipper. It didn't come out as it should have and I'm not satisfied (especially inside). I need more practice!
The faux leather was tricky as I thought. I have no suggestions to give you about it, but only confirmations. Yes, there are holes if you undo a seam. Yes, even the pins leave holes. Yes, if you sew by hand and you pull the thread too much you can ruin the leather.
But I love sewing bags! And I can't wait to sew another one, maybe with another pattern.
And you? Do you love to sew your bags?

  1. Sewing with leather is tricky some times and so is making bags. I have bought a bag pattern from Anna Maria Horner and a couple of books for bag making but I haven't tried anything yet.
Anyway! I think you made yourself a beautiful clutch and I can not see anything wrong in that zipper. Great job!

    1. Thank you Eva! In the pattern, at the beginning and at the end of the zipper there should have been a leather piece and the zipper should have to stay more flat. Not a big problem, but I know where I went wrong. ;)
With this clutch I discovered I love sewing leather even if it's tricky and I want to try sewing it again... I have only to find another pattern! ;)
